It’s always good to read some positive news and this story about a campaign run by T-Mobile is interesting:

News Blaze: You’ve Heard of Pickpockets, Putpockets Slip Money Into Unsuspecting Pockets

The only downside I see is that the people who are being rewarded with free cash are the ones most likely to have it removed by actual pick pockets shortly after.

0902172012mapThe Mapperz  blog has highlighted a great interactive map of the activity around the country in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. Street level details shows the latest ariel photos of the site as well as altering the map to show activities over a particular time period.

An excellent example of how mapping and other media can be combined in a very usable way.

I like reading guides to London, it’s such a huge and varied city you can always find something new about an area you’ve lived or worked in for years.

Today I found a new site thanks to Read/WriteWeb which offers a different apporach to city guides. The IFeel series lets you browse maps of London, New York and Toronto finding things to do and places to go depending on how you few. Choose your mood from energetic, chilled, manly, sophisticated, romantic, naughty, manly and broke. The site is invite only so far but has some good potential to find hidden gems and personal favourites you may have missed around you.

Epping ForestI read a post by Ham on London Daily Photo called How Now Brown Cow. He writes about the south of Epping Forest and talks of memories which match my own so well I feel as if I could have writen his words. (more…)

Getting engagedName the film which the title of this post is from and I’ll owe you a beer. But more important than that is new that I have recently proposed to my girlfriend and we are to get married. This is the very best of news (to quote a sketch I once saw). I have drunk more champagne in the last 5 days than I have in a year, and in more locations than I normally visit in a month.

It started in London last wednesday and reached it’s peak in Brussels at the weekend. I’m enjoying being engaged a lot.

Now there’s the little matter of planning a wedding.

I often read lists of top ten things to do, books to read, films to see. A London focused list of Top Ten Summer Outings on TheOldWorld made me think that my most reliable favorite outing is walking around the city with my camera and photographing whatever takes my interest.

So here’s my Ten places to wonder about, taking photos. I couldn’t put them in an order. (more…)

Last night I was shopping for a present for a good friend of mine at work who’s leaving this week. As they commute long stretches of the tube each day I decided what they would most like to receive as a leaving present would be An Illustrated Guide to the Piccadilly Line (and a wodge of topshop vouchers and some other stuff, we’re not complete bastards).

Piccadily line DVDIt turns out the London Transport Museum has a very impressive library of books on everything tube and train related, and it doesn’t stop there, they have a decent sized display devoted to DVDs. What particularly caught my eye was the series of “Driver eye view” films for each of the tube lines, with a running commentary of dark tunnel followed by dark tunnel of tube track. Now that is a niche market, and they’re got it fully covered. Don’t tell Gorden Brown though or he’ll ban them for being a terrorist threat.

On my way to Covent Garden I also noticed a very nice looking whisky shop which I had a quick look in on. Whisky was stacked floor to ceiling and it reminded me of a cachaca shop in Paraty ‘d been to. In a complete coincidence the London Daily Photo site features the same whisky shop in today’s photo. Which is nice.

Tube stationLiving in and around London all my life it’s easy to take a lot of things for granted. I’m always interested to read other peoples fresh experiences of the city, especially visitors from other countries, as I think it’s good to be reminded of some of the everyday things which you can so easily get used to.

A recent post by a Canadian called Adrienne about the tube is an excellent example of this as she talks about standing on the right on escalators. It’s something which never crosses my mind as I naturally slip in to standing position or march past the other commuters. Good to hear we do some things right here.
